There once was a time when silence meant nothing to me.

I didn't want to admit it, it was easier to lie, and hide the hurt and emptiness, and to smile instead of cry.

Friday, 08 October 2010 With somewhere around a hundred recordings of Mahler’s First Symphony on the market, the potential buyer needs a compelling reason to consider this one from a youth orchestra residing in a country (Singapore) with little performance tradition of the central European classics. But make no mistake—this Mahler First can stand up to nearly any of them in brilliance, enthusiasm, and sheer visceral excitement. One senses this is going to be a performance worthy of attention right from the opening bar, played truly softly (seldom the case in other performances). The first three movements are very well done, but it is the finale that really glows with excellence, unfolding in a seamless arc of controlled intensity. Seldom have I heard an orchestra tear into that finale with the fierce determination of the OMM. It truly roars and rages, yet also brings all the consoling sweetness and tenderness one could wish for in the ensuing Sehr gesangvoll passage. There are virtually no audible flubs, though one detects here and there a slightly out-of-tune chord in the woodwinds and a few (very few) ragged entrances in the strings. But the thrill of the live performance given on January 3, 2010, (surely the first Mahler First for most if not all of these youngsters) is palpable, and the spirit of adventure infuses every page of the score. In fact, it all sounds as if every member of the orchestra had gone out and purchased a recording so as to become thoroughly familiar with the score beforehand. For most of the time, it is difficult to believe that this is an orchestra of players whose average age is just 20 (considerably less than that of the Mahler Youth Orchestra). Distinction abounds in nearly every section. Particularly outstanding are the principal bassoon, Jo Anne Sukumaran; principal horn, Chakrit Songtorsrisakun; principal double bass, Dennis Khoo; and the entire percussion section, which adds considerable heft to the band’s already beefy sound. Singaporean conductor Tze Law Chan obviously has the pulse of the Mahler idiom and is fully in control at all times, demanding and obtaining from his forces every sforzando, dynamic bulge, and subito forte and piano. One would need to search hard to find an orchestra that gives more. Chan’s tempos are traditional except for the Scherzo, which seems more sluggish than rustic, but it is rendered with enough conviction that it just might win you over. Kudos also to the engineers who recorded this performance in Victoria Concert Hall, a handsome old colonial building but severely lacking in proper acoustics. At concerts I have heard there the sound tends to remain stuck on stage, but this handicap is nowhere in evidence on the CD. The acoustical setting is more in keeping with a good seat midway back on the floor of a fine concert hall—vibrant, reverberant, with all forces well balanced and natural. Good program notes and a list of orchestra personnel are included.

This is a live recording from a concert by the Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) in January. For a youth orchestra (the average age of the players is only 19) that is only 1 1/2 years into its existence, the results are astounding. In Gustav Mahler's First Symphony, a typically virtuosic orchestra calling card, the perfomance is strong in all departments.

From its quietly rapt opening with the awakening of spring, through country dances and a funeral march, to the blazingly triumphant finale, there is a palpable sense of occasion and commitment throughout the performance.

Guided by Chan Tze Law's ultra-keen vision, homogeneous unity in string passages, lovingly crafted woodwind solos and a brass section any orchestra would be proud of were distinct hallmarks. While one does not expect absolute perfection, and there is rawness in the recorded sound, that is beside the point. What Singaporean youngsters can achieve when they put their minds to it is the essence that makes this enterprise a totally rewarding experience.

Many things have happened this year.
Exams are ending in 2 days.
Perhaps that's the reason why i'm starting my early reflection now.

I've been really lucky.
Last year this time, i've been thinking,
what if everything goes wrong next year because the year passed by so smoothly.
it's hard to believe, yet another year is passing by quickly and interestingly.

I've been a lucky girl.

first to interlochen where i spent a great summer

and then now, preparing for shanghai.

I'm really grateful for all the chances this year

and it definitely feels good to be recognized.

perhaps when people have an expectation of you,
you tend to work hard and harder to not disappoint them
but when you fail to reach their expectations, it's really upsetting:(
so it's been really scary, having to really move forward.

I'm really afraid to fail- there my innermost secret.
failure. though i'm not unfamilliar with it,
if i can stay away from it, i definitely will.
i know i'll never be like those great players
but at least, i wanna excel in something i love doing.

40 uses for baking soda:
Personal Care
1. Make toothpaste
A paste made from baking soda and a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution can be used as an alternative to commercial non-fluoride toothpastes. (Or here’s a formula for a minty version.) You can also just dip your toothbrush with toothpaste into baking soda for an extra boost.

2. Freshen your mouth
Put one teaspoon in half a glass of water, swish, spit, and rinse. Odors are neutralized, not just covered up.

3. Soak oral appliance
Soak oral appliances (like retainers, mouthpieces, and dentures) in a solution of 2 teaspoons baking soda dissolved in a glass or small bowl of warm water. The baking soda loosens food particles and neutralizes odors to keep appliances fresh. You can also brush appliances clean using baking soda.

4. Use as a facial scrub and body exfoliant
Give yourself an invigorating facial and body scrub. Make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Rub in a gentle circular motion to exfoliate the skin. Rinse clean. This is gentle enough for daily use.

5. Skip harsh deodorant
Pat baking soda onto your underarms to neutralize body odor.

6. Use as an antacid
Baking soda is a safe and effective antacid to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, and/or acid indigestion. Refer to baking soda package for instructions.

7. Treat insect bites and itchy skin
For insect bites, make a paste out of baking soda and water, and apply as a salve onto affected skin. To ease the itch, shake some baking soda into your hand and rub it into damp skin after bath or shower.

8. Make a hand cleanser and softener
Skip harsh soaps and gently scrub away ground-in dirt and neutralize odors on hands with a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water or 3 parts baking soda with gentle liquid hand soap. Then rinse clean.

9. Help your hair
Vinegar is amazing for your hair, but baking soda has its place in the shower too. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into your palm along with your favorite shampoo. Shampoo as usual and rinse thoroughly — baking soda helps remove the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is cleaner and more manageable.

10. Clean brushes and combs
For lustrous hair with more shine, keep brushes and combs clean. Remove natural oil build-up and hair product residue by soaking combs and brushes in a solution of 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a small basin of warm water. Rinse and allow to dry.

11. Make a bath soak
Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your bath to neutralize acids on the skin and help wash away oil and perspiration. It also makes your skin feel very soft. Or just focus on soothing your feet. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of baking soda in a tub of warm water and soak feet. Gently scrub.

Cleaning
12. Make a surface soft scrub
For safe, effective cleaning of bathroom tubs, tile, and sinks — even fiberglass and glossy tiles — sprinkle baking soda lightly on a clean damp sponge and scrub as usual. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry. For extra cleaning power, make a paste with baking soda, coarse salt, and liquid dish soap — let it sit then scour off.

13. Hand-wash dishes and pots and pans
Add 2 heaping tablespoons baking soda (along with your regular dish detergent) to the dish water to help cut grease and foods left on dishes, pots, and pans. For cooked-on foods, let them soak in the baking soda and detergent with water first, then use dry baking soda on a clean damp sponge or cloth as a scratch-less scouring powder.

14. Freshen sponges
Soak stale-smelling sponges in a strong baking soda solution to get rid of the mess (4 tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in 1 quart of warm water). For more thorough disinfecting, use the microwave.

15. Clean the microwave
Baking soda on a clean damp sponge cleans gently inside and outside the microwave and never leaves a harsh chemical smell. Rinse well with water.

16. Polish silver flatware
Use a baking soda paste made with 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Rub onto the silver with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly and dry for shining sterling and silver-plate serving pieces.

17. Clean coffee and tea pots
Remove coffee and tea stains and eliminate bitter off-tastes by washing mugs and coffee makers in a solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. For stubborn stains, try soaking overnight in the baking soda solution and detergent or scrubbing with baking soda on a clean damp sponge.

18. Clean the oven
Sprinkle baking soda onto the bottom of the oven. Spray with water to dampen the baking soda. Let sit overnight. In the morning, scrub, scoop the baking soda and grime out with a sponge, or vacuum, and rinse.

19. Clean floors
Remove dirt and grime (without unwanted scratch marks) from no-wax and tile floors using 1/2 cup baking soda in a bucket of warm water — mop and rinse clean for a sparkling floor. For scuff marks, use baking soda on a clean damp sponge, then rinse.

20. Clean furniture
Clean and remove marks (even crayon) from walls and painted furniture by applying baking soda to a damp sponge and rubbing lightly. Wipe off with a clean, dry cloth.

21. Clean shower curtains
Clean and deodorize your vinyl shower curtain by sprinkling baking soda directly on a clean damp sponge or brush. Scrub the shower curtain and rinse clean. Hang it up to dry.

22. Boost your liquid laundry detergent
Give your laundry a boost by adding 1/2 cup of baking soda to your laundry to make liquid detergent work harder. A better balance of pH in the wash gets clothes cleaner, fresher, and brighter. Or you can add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle for fresher sheets and towels or to neutralize gym clothes and odoriferous clothing.

23. Clean and freshen sports gear
Use a baking soda solution (4 tablespoons baking soda in 1 quart warm water) to clean and deodorize smelly sports equipment. Sprinkle baking soda into golf bags and gym bags to deodorize and clean golf irons (without scratching them!) with a baking soda paste (3 parts baking soda to 1 part water) and a brush. Rinse thoroughly.

24. Remove oil and grease stains
Use baking soda to clean up light-duty oil and grease spills on your garage floor or in your driveway. Sprinkle baking soda on the spot and scrub with a wet brush.

25. Clean batteries
Baking soda can be used to neutralize battery acid corrosion on cars, mowers, etc., because its a mild alkali. Be sure to disconnect the battery terminals before cleaning. Make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water and apply with a damp cloth to scrub corrosion from the battery terminal. After cleaning and reconnecting the terminals, wipe them with petroleum jelly to prevent future corrosion. Please be careful when working around a battery — they contain a strong acid.

26. Clean cars
Use baking soda to clean your car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats, and floor mats without worrying about unwanted scratch marks. Use a baking soda solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Apply with a sponge or soft cloth to remove road grime, tree sap, bugs, and tar. For stubborn stains use baking soda sprinkled on a damp sponge or soft brush. Eliminate odors by sprinkling baking soda directly on fabric car seats and carpets. Wait 15 minutes (or longer for strong odors) and vacuum up the baking soda.

Deodorizing
27. Deodorize your refrigerator
Place an open box in the back of the fridge to neutralize odors.

28. Deodorize trashcans and recyclables
Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of your trashcan to keep stinky trash smells at bay. Clean your recyclables container periodically by sprinkling baking soda on a damp sponge. Wipe clean and rinse. Also, sprinkle baking soda on top as you add recyclables to the bin.

29. Deodorize drains and garbage disposals
To deodorize your sink and tub drains and garbage disposal and keep lingering odors from resurfacing, pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain while running warm tap water — it will neutralize both acid and basic odors for a fresh drain. (This a good way to dispose of baking soda that is being retired from your refrigerator.)

30. Deodorize and clean dishwashers
Use baking soda to deodorize before you run the dishwasher and then as a gentle cleanser in the wash cycle.

31. Deodorize lunch boxes
Between uses, place a spill-proof box of baking soda in everyone’s lunch box to absorb lingering odors.

32. Remove odor from carpets
Liberally sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. Let set overnight or as long as possible (the longer it sets the better it works). Sweep up the larger amounts of baking soda, and vacuum up the rest. (Note that your vacuum cleaner bag will get full and heavy.) An added bonus: You'll also deodorize your vacuum cleaner.

33. Freshen closets
Place a box on the shelf to keep the closet smelling fresh.

34. Deodorize pet items
Cover the bottom of your cat box with baking soda, then fill as usual with litter. To freshen between changes, sprinkle baking soda on top of the litter after a thorough cleaning. Eliminate odors from your pet's bedding by sprinkling liberally with baking soda, wait 15 minutes (or longer for stronger odors), then vacuum up.

35. Deodorize sneakers
Keep odors from spreading in smelly sneakers by shaking baking soda into them when not in use. Shake out before wearing.

36. Freshen stuffed animals
Keep favorite cuddly toys fresh with a dry shower of baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on and let it sit for 15 minutes before brushing off.

Miscellaneous
37. Cure all camping needs
Baking soda is a must-have for your next camping trip. It's a dish-washer, pot-scrubber, hand-cleanser, deodorant, toothpaste, and fire extinguisher, and has many other uses.

38. Extinguish fires
Baking soda can help in the initial handling of minor grease or electrical kitchen fires, because when baking soda is heated, it gives off carbon dioxide, which helps to smother the flames. For small cooking fires (frying pans, broilers, ovens, grills), turn off the gas or electricity if you can safely do so. Stand back and throw handfuls of baking soda at the base of the flame to help put out the fire — and call the fire department just to be safe.

39. Care for the septic system

I have 3 very cute blisters thanks to vibrato and pizzicato.

I'd say, concert was good tonight! Except those minor screw ups teehee><

Rehearsal was delayed by more than an hour cos the scores for mozart went missing.

It resulted in a very very rushedd dinner (it wasn't good anyway! )

Strauss was... uhm well it went by really fast!

I wasn't playing for Mozart concerto, so we had 30 mins to kill.

Happy 2010.

As the countdown begins, I start to doubt.

Freak out, Upset, Disappointed, Uncertainty

Excited, Nervous, Scared, I don't know.

There's just a complex feeling inside me.

And not knowing why makes it even worse.

2009 was great and screwed up.

2010 is going to be exciting and scary.

See, there's no really an answer to life

There can be a stupid final answer when you solve for x,

but in life, there isn't (however it can still bet stupid).

Sometimes, I thought 2009 went a little too smoothly and I start to worry.

Am I up to the challenges this year?

Other times, I thought those little bumpy emotional stressing rides I've gone through,

Do I think " I hope 2010 will be better 'cos i've gone through the worse"

Define worse. Do I know what's worse? So there's another option

You see, there's not really an answer to everything.

Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) Thirty-nine classic violins crafted in Italy as early as 450 years ago will be put on display at the National Palace Museum beginning Saturday, the Chi Mei Museum said Friday.
The 39 violins, the cream of the 468 violins that Chi Mei Group founder Shi Wen-long has collected from around the world over the past several decades, will systematically reveal the instrument's 400-year history, said Chung Tai-ting, an adviser to the Chi Mei Museum.
Among the masterpieces on display originating from Cremona and Brescia -- the two cities in the Po Valley region in northern Italy considered to be the cradle of violin production -- is a Guarneri del Gesu violin used by Norwegian virtuoso and national hero Ole Bull (1810-1880).
The violin, known later as Ole Bull's Violin, was crafted by iconic Italian violin maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu in 1744.
According to Chung, Shi obtained the precious instrument in 1992 from a Chicago-based antique instrument trader at a price exceeding NT$100 million.
Chung said the Ole Bull Violin will return to Norway next May to be displayed at a special exhibition organized to mark the 200th anniversary of Bull's birth.
The two oldest instruments in Shi's collection will both be exhibited. A tenor viola crafted by Brescian School master craftsman Pellegrino di Zanetto De Micheli and a violin crafted by another Brescian School master craftsman Gasparo Bertolotti da Salo both date back nearly 450 years.
Another world-famous instrument in the exhibition is a cello crafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1730. U.S.-based cellist Yo-Yo Ma played it when he staged a concert in Taiwan in 1999, according to Chung.
Many of the precious violins in Shi's collection have at one point been loaned to Taiwanese musicians for international musical competitions or concerts. One of those musicians was Hu Nai-yuan, who played the Ole Bull Violin in Norway and Germany.
Dubbed the Legend of Italian Violins, the exhibition that kicks off at National Palace Museum Saturday and runs until Jan. 17, 2010, will have 118 pieces, including the 39 famous violins and bows, and paintings, sculptures and handicrafts.

Caught the train for Tainan today.

Went to my uncle's place with mommy and aunt.

Mommy and aunt went through the Big Box with my grandmom's stuff.

went out early in the morning for biking today..

mommy and i took the ferry to another island and rented 2 bikes.

Been traveling every few days, from one place to another.

Well a few days back, i went to Taitung.

On the drive there, we saw what the typhoon/flood a few months back did to the area.

The flood caused huge landslides and covered a village of the native taiwanese.

We saw broken bridges, piles and piles of soil, and the huge empty area where houses used to be.

Most of the houses are washed into the sea, leaving many homeless.

It was quite a devastating sight though...

And I managed to take in the whole disastrous area in a car that's driving at 80 mph

this proves how long that whole stretch was.

imagine all the homeless people.

there were loads of debris everywhere:/

i nearly cried.

yes, i lost someone whom i've known since young.

my friend.

she's nowhere to be found, probably washed away with the house.

i ain't gonna see her again.

anyways we went to stay at my aunt's house at the seaside.

it was beautiful.

woke up at 5am to see the sunrise, and there were many stars at night.

it doesn't feel like winter at all.. quite hot actually haha.

i'm back in kaohsiung. and will stay here for a week,

thank goodness, NO MORE TRAVELLING.

It's been a long time since there was such a great family gathering.

buffet lunch from 12.30-4. champion.

A great big family made up of 10 individual families came together to celebrate my aunt's birthday.

and yeah, as the years passed, the members increased!

cousin in laws, niece and nephews.

not all cousins were present today, sadly.

we were missing at least 11 more.

yes they are of a different generation and yes i'm their auntie alr.

damn cute once they manage to actually be in the conversation.

yes and the older ones are the cousins all grown up. time flies.

it feels really good to go out with my cousins finally.
